Sign-on to Consumer Health First's Response to CareFirst's 2018 Proposed Rates

CareFirst is requesting approval to increase its rates in the individual market in 2018 by a shocking 45 to nearly 75 percent. These increases are unaffordable for consumers without access to premium or cost-sharing subsidies. As we have outlined in our letter to the Maryland Insurance Administration, there are many reasons to reject the proposed rate increases. One of the most important reasons is to protect Maryland's market so it can continue on its path to stability. A stable individual health insurance market preserves access to health care for those who do not have an employer sponsored plan available to them, helps to reduce uncompensated care, and has helped lower costs in the small group market.
