Press Statement on Maryland Insurance Administration's Approval of Rate Hikes for State Health Insurers

The Maryland Women's Coalition for Health Care Reform, which represents 100 organizations and more than 1,800 individuals working to advance health equity in Maryland, released the following press statement in response to the Maryland Insurance Administration's (MIA) announcement today of newly approved 2016 premium rates for individual health insurance plans offered in the state. These rates include significant increases for health plans offered by CareFirst, the state's largest insurer on the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange. The MIA approved increases between 19-26 percent for CareFirst companies on the Exchange. CareFirst requested rates of up to 30.4 percent more than the current year's rates.
